The National Brewery Heritage Trust has appointed two new trustees at its recent Annual General Meeting.
Anthony Hughes and Tom Stainer were both appointed for an initial 3-year period. They join the charity which was established in 2012 to protect, preserve and promote the archives and artefacts which together make up the National Brewery Collection.
Anthony Hughes is the Founder of Lincoln Green Brewing Company Limited, an independent brewery and pub company based in Nottinghamshire. Anthony had a long career in retail, working for Foster Menswear, the Arcadia Group and Dollond & Aitchison the opticians, before deciding to turn a life-long hobby into a business. Lincoln Green was established in 2012.
Anthony said: “It’s an honour to be able to work with the National Brewing Heritage Trust in order to reflect the social and economic benefit pubs and beer have throughout the history of the United Kingdom.”
Tom Stainer has spent almost three decades involved in the pub, brewing and wider hospitality sector.
He was deputy news editor for the Morning Advertiser, before becoming deputy editor and then editor of Morning Advertiser Scotland. Moving to the Campaign for Real Ale around 20 years ago, he was editor of What’s Brewing, and launched and edited BEER magazine, before serving as Head of Communications, Chief of Campaigns and Communications, and for the last five years as CAMRA Chief Executive. He’s also sat on steering groups for Cyclops, PubAid, and Beer Matters.
Tom said: “I’m delighted and honoured to join the National Brewery Heritage Trust as a trustee. The work it carries out is vital to preserve, protect and promote Britian’s fantastic brewing heritage – a mission which isn’t just about the past, but relevant to our beer culture, people and places in the present.”
Trust Chairman Dr Harry White commented: “We are very pleased to welcome Anthony and Tom to the board. Their industry knowledge and contacts will be invaluable as we move into a new phase for the Trust.
“These appointments come as the Trust is working closely with East Staffordshire Borough Council on a new attraction that will share the story of Britain’s brewing heritage. Along with key stakeholders including Molson Coors the ambition is to make Burton upon Trent the national hub of British brewing and pub heritage.”
Long-standing Trustees Nik Antona and Terry Critchley both stood down at the recent AGM, for personal reasons. Nik Antona joined the board in 2012, and Terry Critchley joined in 2016, serving as Company Secretary since 2022.
Harry continued: “On behalf of the Trust, I thank them for their contribution and wish them the very best.”
