The National Barrel Rolling Championships organised by the National Brewery Heritage Trust will take place at the National Brewery Centre on Saturday 25 October 2014.
Barrel Rolling is one of Burton’s oldest brewing traditions. The first competition took place 80 years ago in May 1933 with 12 men’s teams from local breweries racing from the Town Hall to the town centre. The decline in sponsorship and a number of teams entering saw the competition moving to the Czech Republic over 10 years ago.
Keith Norris Chair of the National Brewery Heritage Trust and current champion who brought the championships back to Burton in 2011 is appealing to local companies, breweries and individuals to step forward and take part in the races. Stating that it is very important to ensure that one of Burton’s oldest and most important tradition is not lost forever. In order to achieve this we need your support and involvement. I can assure you that everyone who enters the competition has a lot of fun and can cool down with a few beers from the Independent Brewers Beer Festival.
The Championships has three categories: Men’s Singles; Ladies Singles and Mixed Doubles. All categories are open to individuals and businesses. Prizes and Trophies will be presented to the winners of each category. The races will run round a circuit at the National Brewery Centre in Horninglow Street.
